Your Coating Is Tough, But Not Invincible
A professional ceramic coating is one of the best investments you can make for your vehicle. But like any investment, it needs proper care to deliver maximum returns. The good news? Maintaining a ceramic coating is actually much easier than maintaining unprotected paint.
The Do's of Ceramic Coating Care
Do: Wait Before the First Wash
After application, your ceramic coating needs time to fully cure. At Chicago Auto Spa, we recommend waiting 7 full days before your first wash. During this time:
- Park in a garage if possible
- Avoid driving in rain (if you can)
- Don't touch or wipe the paint surface
- No bird dropping removal (we know, it's hard to resist)
Do: Use pH-Neutral Car Wash Soap
Regular car wash soap is too harsh for ceramic coatings. Use a pH-neutral, SiO2-infused car wash soap. These are specifically formulated to clean without stripping the coating's hydrophobic properties. Our favorites:
- Gtechniq G-Wash
- CarPro Reset
- Adam's Ceramic Boost Wash
Do: Use the Two-Bucket Method
Even with a ceramic coating, proper wash technique matters:
- Fill one bucket with soapy water
- Fill a second bucket with clean rinse water
- Wash one panel at a time
- Rinse your wash mitt in the clean water before reloading with soap
- This prevents you from grinding dirt back into the coating
Do: Dry Properly
Use a microfiber drying towel or a filtered air blower. Never let your car air dry — water spots from hard water can etch into the coating over time.
Do: Apply a Ceramic Boost Spray
Every 3-6 months, apply a ceramic boost spray (also called a ceramic topper or maintenance spray). This refreshes the hydrophobic layer and adds a sacrificial layer of protection. Simply spray on after washing and wipe off with a microfiber towel.
Do: Schedule Annual Inspections
Bring your vehicle back to your installer once a year for a professional inspection. We'll check the coating's condition, address any areas that need attention, and apply a professional-grade maintenance treatment.
The Don'ts of Ceramic Coating Care
Don't: Use Automatic Car Washes
Those spinning brushes and harsh chemicals are the enemy of ceramic coatings. They create micro-scratches and strip the hydrophobic layer. Touchless automatic washes are better but still use overly aggressive chemicals.
Don't: Use Abrasive Products
Avoid any product with abrasive compounds:
- No rubbing compound
- No polishing compound
- No clay bar (unless directed by your installer)
- No bug and tar remover with abrasives
Don't: Let Contaminants Sit
While your ceramic coating provides excellent chemical resistance, it's not immune to damage from prolonged exposure. Remove these promptly:
- Bird droppings: Within 24 hours (acidic and can etch)
- Tree sap: Within 48 hours
- Bug splatter: Within a few days
- Road salt: Rinse off weekly during winter
Don't: Park Under Trees
Tree sap, bird droppings, and pollen are the three biggest threats to ceramic coatings. If you can avoid parking under trees, do it.
Don't: Skip Regular Washing
A ceramic coating makes washing easier, but it doesn't eliminate the need for it. Wash your vehicle every 1-2 weeks to prevent contaminant buildup. The good news? A coated car takes about half the time to wash compared to an uncoated one.
When to Recoat
Even the best ceramic coatings eventually wear down. Signs it's time for a recoat:
- Water no longer beads tightly (sheets instead of beading)
- The surface feels rough after washing
- Gloss has noticeably diminished
- Contaminants are sticking more than usual
Most professional coatings last 2-5 years with proper maintenance. Our Diamond Coat package comes with a lifetime warranty and includes annual maintenance visits.
