Spring Car Care Checklist: Recovering from a Chicago Winter

Why Spring Maintenance Matters

If you've survived another Chicago winter, congratulations — but your car might not have fared as well. Months of road salt, ice, slush, and sub-zero temperatures wreak havoc on every surface of your vehicle. Spring is the critical window to address this damage before it becomes permanent.

The Complete Spring Recovery Checklist

1. Thorough Exterior Wash

This isn't your regular car wash. After winter, you need a decontamination wash that removes:

  • Road salt deposits (especially in wheel wells and undercarriage)
  • Calcium and mineral buildup from road treatments
  • Tar and asphalt splatter from winter road repairs
  • Brake dust accumulation from months of wet driving
Pro tip: Start with a pressure rinse of the undercarriage. Salt accumulation underneath is the #1 cause of rust on Chicago vehicles.

2. Clay Bar Treatment

Even after a thorough wash, your paint will have embedded contaminants from winter driving. A clay bar treatment removes these microscopic particles that washing alone can't reach. Run your hand across a freshly washed panel — if it feels rough or gritty, you need clay bar treatment.

3. Paint Inspection

Winter is when most paint damage occurs. Look for:

  • Rock chips: Especially on the hood, bumper, and fenders from road debris
  • Salt etching: White spots or rough patches where salt has eaten into the clear coat
  • Swirl marks: From improper snow/ice removal (brushes and scrapers)
  • Oxidation: Dull, faded areas where UV exposure and salt have degraded the paint

4. Paint Correction (If Needed)

If you find swirl marks, light scratches, or oxidation, a professional paint correction can restore your paint to like-new condition. This process uses specialized polishing compounds and machine polishers to remove a microscopic layer of damaged clear coat, revealing the fresh paint underneath.

5. Protection Application

Once your paint is clean and corrected, it's time to protect it:

  • Minimum: Apply a quality wax or paint sealant
  • Better: Apply a ceramic coating for 2-5 years of protection
  • Best: Install PPF on high-impact areas + ceramic coating everywhere

6. Interior Deep Clean

Winter brings its own set of interior challenges:

  • Salt stains on carpets and mats — These need immediate attention before they set permanently
  • Moisture and mildew — Check under seats and in trunk for dampness
  • Leather conditioning — Cold, dry air dries out leather. It needs moisturizing after winter
  • Air vent cleaning — Months of running the heater circulates dust and allergens

7. Window and Tint Check

Inspect your window tint for:

  • Bubbling or peeling (especially on older tint)
  • Purple discoloration (sign of degraded dye film)
  • Scratches from ice scrapers

If your tint is showing its age, spring is the perfect time to upgrade to ceramic tint.

The Cost of Skipping Spring Maintenance

Ignoring winter damage doesn't make it go away — it makes it worse. Salt left on paint will continue to corrode. Swirl marks will deepen. Embedded contaminants will bond permanently. What could be fixed with a $200 detail in spring might require a $1,500 paint correction by summer.
