Window tinting is one of the most popular vehicle modifications, and for good reason. It reduces heat, blocks UV rays, enhances privacy, and gives your car a sleek appearance. But before you tint your windows, it's crucial to understand Illinois state law to avoid costly tickets.
Current Legal Limits in Illinois
Illinois has specific regulations for how dark your window tint can be, measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of light that passes through the film.

What Does 35% VLT Look Like?
A 35% VLT tint is actually quite noticeable. It blocks 65% of visible light, giving your windows a medium-dark appearance. From the outside, people can still see into the vehicle during the day, but it significantly reduces glare and heat.
Medical Exemptions
Illinois does allow medical exemptions for darker tint. If you have a medical condition that requires protection from sunlight (such as lupus, photosensitivity, or certain skin conditions), you can apply for an exemption through the Secretary of State's office. You'll need:
- A signed statement from your physician
- Documentation of your medical condition
- The exemption certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times
