Understanding Illinois Window Tint Laws

Window tinting is one of the most popular vehicle modifications, and for good reason. It reduces heat, blocks UV rays, enhances privacy, and gives your car a sleek appearance. But before you tint your windows, it's crucial to understand Illinois state law to avoid costly tickets.

Current Legal Limits in Illinois

Illinois has specific regulations for how dark your window tint can be, measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT) — the percentage of light that passes through the film.

Sedans and Coupes

WindowLegal VLT Limit
WindshieldNon-reflective tint on top 6 inches only
Front Side WindowsMust allow 35% or more light in
Rear Side WindowsMust allow 35% or more light in
Rear WindowMust allow 35% or more light in

SUVs and Vans

Rear Side WindowsAny darkness allowed
Rear WindowAny darkness allowed

What Does 35% VLT Look Like?

A 35% VLT tint is actually quite noticeable. It blocks 65% of visible light, giving your windows a medium-dark appearance. From the outside, people can still see into the vehicle during the day, but it significantly reduces glare and heat.

Medical Exemptions

Illinois does allow medical exemptions for darker tint. If you have a medical condition that requires protection from sunlight (such as lupus, photosensitivity, or certain skin conditions), you can apply for an exemption through the Secretary of State's office. You'll need:

  • A signed statement from your physician
  • Documentation of your medical condition
  • The exemption certificate must be kept in the vehicle at all times

Ceramic Tint vs. Standard Tint

At Chicago Auto Spa, we recommend ceramic window tint for Illinois drivers. Here's why:

Standard dyed film achieves darkness by using darker dye, which means you need a darker shade to get good heat rejection. This can put you over the legal limit. Ceramic film uses nano-ceramic technology to reject heat without needing to be dark. You can get a legal 35% VLT ceramic tint that rejects more heat than an illegal 5% standard tint. It's the best of both worlds — legal compliance with maximum performance.

Ceramic Tint Benefits:

  • Blocks up to 99% of UV rays at any VLT level
  • Rejects up to 60% of solar heat
  • No signal interference (won't affect GPS, phone, or radio)
  • Won't fade or turn purple over time
  • Lifetime warranty available

Penalties for Illegal Tint in Illinois

Getting caught with illegal tint in Illinois can result in:

  • First offense: Fine of $50-75 plus court costs
  • Subsequent offenses: Fines up to $500
  • Equipment violation: May be required to remove the tint before your next inspection

Police officers use tint meters during traffic stops to measure VLT. If your tint is below the legal limit, you'll receive a citation.

Our Recommendation

For most Illinois drivers, we recommend a 35% VLT ceramic tint on all windows. This keeps you fully legal while providing excellent heat rejection, UV protection, and a clean appearance. For SUV and van owners, you have the option to go darker on the rear windows — many of our customers choose 20% or even 5% on the back for maximum privacy.
