Illinois Window Tint Laws (2026)
Before getting your windows tinted in Chicago, you need to understand Illinois law. Getting pulled over for illegal tint is a $75-$750 fine, and you'll have to remove it.
Legal Tint Limits in Illinois
| Window | Minimum VLT (Visible Light Transmission) |
| Windshield | Non-reflective tint on top 6 inches only |
| Front side windows | 35% VLT minimum |
| Rear side windows | Any darkness |
| Rear window | Any darkness |
Reflectivity Rules
Illinois prohibits metallic or mirrored tint on any window. The tint must not be more than 25% reflective. This is another reason we recommend ceramic film — it achieves excellent heat rejection without any metallic content or reflectivity.
Types of Window Tint Film
Dyed Film (Budget Option)
- Heat rejection: 15-30%
- UV rejection: 95-99%
- Lifespan: 3-5 years
- Pros: Cheapest option, good appearance
- Cons: Fades to purple over time, lower heat rejection, bubbles eventually
- Our take: We don't offer dyed film. It degrades too quickly in Chicago's extreme temperature swings.
Carbon Film (Mid-Range)
- Heat rejection: 40-50%
- UV rejection: 99%
- Lifespan: 10-15 years
- Pros: No fading, no signal interference, good heat rejection
- Cons: Less heat rejection than ceramic
- Price at CAS: $230-$350 (full car)
Ceramic Film (Premium)
- Heat rejection: 85-97% infrared
- UV rejection: 99%
- Lifespan: 15-20+ years
- Pros: Maximum heat rejection, crystal clarity, no interference
- Cons: Higher upfront cost
- Price at CAS: $299-$549 (full car)
Why Ceramic Tint Is Worth It in Chicago
Chicago's climate is extreme — summers regularly hit 90°F+ and winters drop below 0°F. Ceramic window tint provides year-round benefits:
Summer: Blocks up to 97% of infrared heat, reducing interior temperatures by 40-60°F. Your AC works less, saving fuel and extending compressor life. Winter: Ceramic film provides insulation, helping retain cabin heat. It also reduces glare from snow and ice, improving driving visibility. Year-round: 99% UV rejection protects your dashboard, leather seats, and interior trim from fading and cracking. This is especially important for vehicles with leather interiors.Window Tinting Costs in Chicago (2026)

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash my car after tinting?Wait 3-5 days before rolling down windows or washing. The film needs time to fully cure and adhere to the glass.
Will tint affect my defroster? No. Our films are applied to the inside of the glass and don't interfere with rear defrosters or antenna lines.
Can tint be applied in winter?Yes. Our shop is climate-controlled, so we install year-round. Curing may take slightly longer in cold weather.
