Legal Darkness in Illinois

Sedans: 35% VLT allowed on all four sides and the rear window. SUVs, vans, pickups: front doors at 50% or lighter, anything goes behind them. Illinois allows a nonreflective tint strip on the top 6 inches of the windshield (625 ILCS 5/12-503). Illinois requires the film to be nonreflective; mirrored or metallic-reflective film isn't legal on the front or rear side windows. What's the price difference between the films?

About $20 at the starting tiers: $155 standard versus $175 ceramic. If the car parks outside in Justice, take the ceramic.

Can you tint a car I just bought used, or does old film get in the way?

Old film comes off first — removal is routine, adhesive and all — then fresh film goes on. We quote both parts up front.

How dark can my Tahoe's back windows go?

As dark as you want — Illinois sets no limit behind the front doors on SUVs. Fronts stay at 50% or lighter.

Is there a wait for weekends?

Weekends book fastest. Call a couple days ahead for Saturday or Sunday; weekdays are usually wide open.
